ABOUT THE ARTIST
Nevada
photographer Louis Basso has been
creating dynamic photographs of the west for over 20 years. He grew up
in Reno and has always loved nature, the outdoors and the western
lifestyle. According to louis, "There is no better place to be
than at the edge of the Sierra Nevada where the desert and
mountains meet , under a big western sky, providing many photographic
opportunities."
In the
early years of his photographic career, Louis' love of the landscape
led him to work with large format cameras in 4x5 and 5x7, and printing
black and white in his own darkroom. He was also inspired
by the old photographic processes and produced hand colored
photos from his black and
white images. More recently Louis' desire to photograph the
people of the west, has led him to working with 35mm and digital
SLR cameras.
Louis has
traveled to locales ranging from Elko, Nev., to the Oregon coast, to
high in the Eastern Sierra, helping lead horseback workshops with
fellow photographer and mentor Ira Gostin.
He has been
published in several magazines and his prints hang in the homes of many
collectors and western enthusiasts. In edition to working with Gostin
at National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, the Santa Clarita Cowboy
Festival in Calif., Mule Days in Bishop Calif., and numerous photo
workshops, he is the official photographer for the Reno Rodeo
Cattle Drive. Louis
and wife Terri, live on their 85 acre ranch in Palomino Valley, Nev.,
with their two dogs, kitty and horse Red.
